Riyadh Airports Records a New Achievement by Adding Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technologies to Enhance Baggage Handling Systems at King Khalid International Airport in Cooperation With Amazon AWS and AIRIS

  • 2022-12-02

As part of Riyadh Airports' strategic plan to enhance operations at the King Khalid International Airport, the Company has announced its cooperation with Amazon Web Services AWS and AIRIS to explore the application of the latest international technologies in the development of baggage handling systems and accompanying services at the King Khalid International Airport. The cooperation focused on developing artificially intelligent solutions for a proactive maintenance approach of the baggage handling system, utilizing industrial internet of things and unsupervised machine learning algorithms.

The Chief Executive Officer of Riyadh Airports, Engineer Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Maghlouth, said: "One of the main pillars of successful operations at the airport is the introduction of state-of-the-art and highly efficient technology to achieve the lowest possible percentage of operational risks.

The Company is using the latest AWS technology based on artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance the quality and efficiency of operations at the airport to ensure an improved passenger experience. It aims to reduce unforeseen failures by up to 50% by using predictive analytics to schedule planned downtime while working to reduce repair time by up to 60%.
With the implementation of the Predictive Analytics Solution across our Baggage Handling System, our teams will have sufficient time to coordinate logistics and schedule service downtime when required.

We are confident that it will achieve the desired results, eliminating the risk of operational disruption of the baggage handling system that would negatively affect operations at the airport."

Moulham Zahabi, Principal Consultant at Airis-Solutions.ai added: “In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, it is an absolute pleasure to work with Riyadh Airports and AWS partners to develop AI/ML technologies to reinvent how airports manage their assets. Our solutions aim to maximize asset utilization and performance to enhance the passenger experience while minimize operating expenses.

Riyadh Airports Company is one of the leading companies in bringing the latest smart technologies to the field of aviation. King Khalid International Airport is the first airport to apply this technology in baggage handling systems worldwide. Additionally, the efforts of Riyadh Airports using these technologies were recognized as the first registered public reference for this use case with Amazon Web Services AWS in the travel and transportation industry”.

In anticipation of the Company's ongoing development, King Khalid International Airport received the Best Evolution Airport Award for 2022, which comes on the sidelines of the Passenger Terminal Expo Conference in Paris at the Skytrax World Awards, which evaluate airlines and airports among more than 550 airports worldwide.
