ACI APAC & MID calls for investment in training as screening technology deployment set to double in Middle East

  • 2026-02-16

A major shift is coming to Middle East airport checkpoints, with the number of cabin baggage CT machines and body scanners is estimated to double over the next three years in the Middle East.

Speaking at the 5th Meeting of the ICAO Middle East Regional Aviation Security and Facilitation Group (MID-RASFG/5), hosted by the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) recently, ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East cautioned that the technological advancements are likely to disrupt the traditional role of the airport screener. As airports increasingly deploy cabin baggage CT systems and advanced body scanners, screeners will move from conventional image inspection to managing sophisticated detection systems and interpreting complex data outputs. ACI APAC & MID encouraged Member States to work closely with airport operators to address the evolving roles of screening personnels and to invest in training needs as airports continue to integrate new technologies.

During the meeting, ACI APAC & MID also provided an update on its Airport Excellence (APEX) programme in Security, outlining its objectives and encouraging Member States to promote APEX assessments among their airport operators to strengthen security standards.

The MID-RASFG serves as a key regional platform to strengthen cooperation framework and enhance aviation security and facilitation. This year, the meeting brought together 45 participants, including delegates from 9 States, alongside representatives from industry associations. The next MID-RASFG meeting is scheduled to be held in United Arab Emirates, with the date to be confirmed.
