Interim use of New Runway as a Parallel Taxiway at Velana International Airport

  • 2022-02-01

Velana International Airport (VIA) newly developed runway will be used as a temporary Taxiway.  New runway used as a parallel taxiway will gain operational efficiency, enabling it to accommodate 16 aircrafts from 8 aircraft in a duration of one hour. The airport can also extend services to additional flights during peak hours and drastically minimize the flights on hold.

The time taken to free up space on the runway after flight landing moves to 2 minutes from 10 minutes with this change shortening the operational time for passenger’s convenience.

Despite the current use as a taxiway, the new runway will be implemented for its initial operation in the third of quarter of 2022. The new runway is 3400 meters long and 65 meters wide, capable of accommodating the biggest passenger flights.
