Uber PIN touches down at at Wellington Airport - connecting travellers with a seamless ride

  • 2025-12-09

From today, travellers at Wellington Airport can experience a smoother and more efficient arrival, thanks to a new dedicated Uber pick-up zone leveraging PIN technology. The launch comes as Wellington Airport prepares for the busiest period of the year, with over 400,000 passengers expected to travel through the airport over the holiday period.

Specifically designed for busy locations such as airports, Uber’s cutting-edge PIN technology now lets returning Wellington locals and visitors book an Uber trip, then simply stroll 15 meters from the terminal doors to catch their ride from the new dedicated pick-up zone.

The technology matches riders to a driver already waiting in the Uber pick-up zone - removing the need to wait for an assigned driver to arrive. After requesting a ride, riders will receive a PIN code which they can provide to the first available driver at the pickup zone before starting their trip. Emma Foley, Managing Director of Uber Australia and New Zealand, said:

“We’re proud to partner with Wellington Airport to introduce Uber’s PIN matching technology in a new dedicated Uber pick-up zone, conveniently located near the terminal. PIN has proven to be a popular choice for travellers around the world, and this new zone will significantly enhance the experience for both riders and drivers by making pick-ups smoother and more efficient."

“Its arrival couldn’t be better timed, helping ensure Wellington locals and visitors alike enjoy a great welcome as they touch down this summer - and we’re excited to be part of that."

Available for the first time in New Zealand, Uber’s PIN technology has already been successfully deployed in 15 airports globally. Recently, the NSW Government committed to making the technology permanent at Sydney Airport’s T1 International Terminal following a successful 12-month trial, which saw a 15.2% reduction in passenger wait times, 88.4% reduction in driver idle time and 12.5% increase in customer satisfaction.

Richard Dalby, Commercial General Manager at Wellington Airport said: “Uber is hugely popular with travellers at Wellington Airport and this will improve the experience for travellers even more. “Our dedicated pick-up area for Uber has worked really well and not having to wait for an assigned driver will make it quicker and easier to grab a ride. We’re proud to be the first airport in New Zealand with this new technology.”

Travellers will continue to benefit from all the usual Uber app features on trips from Wellington Airport, including an up-front price before they confirm, GPS tracking, 24/7 customer support and seamless payment.
