Security-by-Design concept must be integrated into airport infrastructure development
- 2025-11-13
Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), representing over 600 airports, emphasised the growing importance of integrating security considerations into the planning and design of airport infrastructure at the Global Aviation Security Seminar held in Incheon, Republic of Korea, on 4 November. The event, hosted by Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC), brought together around 100 participants from government bodies, airports, academia, and airlines.
This year's programme featured international speakers from Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, India and ACI APAC & MID, who shared industry best practices on key aviation security priorities.
Speaking on behalf of ACI APAC & MID, Mr. Gary Leung, Senior Manager for Security and Facilitation, highlighted the need to adopt a “security-by-design” approach as airports across the region embark on major infrastructure expansions. He stressed that embedding security at the earliest stages of design not only enhances operational effectiveness and resilience but also reduces long-term costs and the need for disruptive retrofits. He emphasised the need for stakeholders, including airports and regulators, to work closely together to ensure security considerations are integrated into the upfront design of new airport infrastructure.
The presentation was followed by a panel discussion, moderated by the Deputy Security Director of IIAC, Mr. Jonathan Joohyung Lee, featuring an exchange of diverse perspectives on evolving security strategies, knowledge, and emerging technologies.
