Jeju Airport in Korea Opens World-class Smart Security Checkpoint

  • 28 Jun 2019

Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) is launching world-class Smart Security checkpoint at Jeju International Airport with state-of-the-art screening equipment. Through this, KAC is expected to provide more accurate and faster screening services to passengers and to improve work environment at security checkpoints.

Under current checkpoint system, enhanced security checks for aircraft safety leads to increased inconvenience for passengers with intensive security measures. KAC-led Smart Security System aims to overcome such challenges. The U.S. Transport Security Administration(TSA) highly praised this innovative system during their visit in Jeju late last year. Airport authorities from Japan and China are expected to make visit to benchmark the new system.

The new checkpoint has Security Scanner(QPS 201) by Rohde & Schwarz which allows more accurate and faster passenger screening. Also, passengers do not have to take the laptop out of their bag, thanks to 3D image screening of CT X-ray(HS 6040 CTiX) by Smiths Detection with the world’s first Automated Target Recognition system based on AI. This CT X-ray is adopted among the few advanced airports including Changi airport. Moreover, ATRS(Automated Tray Return System, iLane evo.plus) and CIP(Centralized Image Processing) system will help improving work environment for security officers as well as screening services for passengers.

KAC has been benchmarking the system from advanced airports such as Schiphol and Heathrow airport. Also, continued cooperative relationship with IATA(International Air Transport Association), a leading expert in Smart Security, was maintained for optimized operation at security checkpoints.

Establishing Smart Security system at Jeju Airport provided the opportunity to search for the key to improve security effectiveness, operational efficiency and passenger experience. KAC will continue to build upon operational experiences and expertise with Smart Security system, so as to expand the system to new airports and take the lead in Aviation Security in the world.
