GMR Hyderabad International Airport Converts Taxiway Center Line Lights to Smart LED

  • 09 Nov 2018
  • 715 Taxiway Center Line lights migrated to the advanced SafeLED IQ lamps
  • 58% of entire airfield ground lighting switched to LED
  • Approx. 1 Lac units of electricity to be saved every year
  • Approx. 81000 kg of CO2 to be curbed every year

Hyderabad, 9th Nov 2018: GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL) has achieved one more milestone in its quest to become a 100% LED Airport. The airport has completed the conversion of 715 Taxiway Center Line lights from conventional Halogen to the innovative and energy efficient Safe LED IQ lamps. The project took a month to complete without any impact to airport operations. With this milestone, Hyderabad International Airport has converted around 58% of Airfield Ground Lighting to LED lamps. Around 80% of the entire lights at the airport is now on LED.

How is it different?

The SafeLED IQ lamps used in the Taxiway Center Line Lights is innovative and equipped with the unique technology having built-in intelligence for seamless monitoring and control of each lamp in real time remotely. This technology not only imparts energy and cost optimization, but also offers reduced maintenance, ease of handling and better Airside safety. The LED fitting offers Fail Open technology, which provides functionality that allows a CCR (Constant Current Regulator) to detect LED lamp failure on real time. With the built-in intelligence in the individual LED fixtures, there is no requirement to have individual monitoring of lamps. This saves cost and enables easy integration with its existing Airfield Lighting and individual Lamp Control and Monitoring System. These features increase the efficiency of maintenance work and enhance operational excellence.

What are the advantages?

Retrofitted across over 12 km area of the airside, these smart LED lamps are expected to save approximately 1 lac unit of energy annually, while helping curb CO2 emissions to about 81000kg per year.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. SGK Kishore, CEO, GHIAL, said, “Hyderabad International Airport has been consistently raising its bar when it comes to environmental sustenance. We are infusing energy efficient technologies at the airport to reduce our dependency on conventional energy source. Aligned to this objective, we have introduced energy efficient Smart LED at the critical zone of taxiway center line lights for effective and efficient operations that enables in ensuring maintenance downtime to the minimum while adding to the airside operational excellence. With this milestone, we have now migrated close to 80% of entire airport lights to energy-efficient LED technology.”

Taxiway centre line lights are mandated to be part of a standard taxi-route, exit taxiway, taxiway, and apron intended for use in runway visual range conditions in such a manner as to provide continuous guidance between the runway centre line and aircraft stands. SafeLED IQ lamps meet all regulatory requirements.

Hyderabad Airport has also recently converted its 59 mast light fixtures from Metal Halide (MH) lamps to energy efficient LED lamps. These 80-90 feet tall light towers are dotted across the airside and landside of Hyderabad International Airport. These mast lights are used for lighting larger areas.
