Global Security Leaders convene in Hong Kong to discuss emerging aviation security topics
- 2026-05-26

The landscape of aviation security has been evolving, an agile airport operation is critical to maintain the trust of travellers, especially in an increasingly complex operating environment. The 59th meeting of the ACI World Security Standing Committee (WSSC/59) gathered in Hong Kong in Hong Kong from 6–8 May 2026. Hosted by the Airport Authority Hong Kong, the three-day gathering convened more than 20 security professionals from airports worldwide, alongside representatives from ACI regional offices, to share intelligence on the emerging aviation security trends and challenges.
The meeting discussed several recent regulatory updates from ICAO, including the latest mandate on power banks. Under this new requirement, passengers may carry no more than two power bank units onto an aircraft. The restriction has raised concerns about the additional screening burden placed on frontline security screeners, who should primarily focus on security-restricted items, such as bombs, knives, and explosives. The professionals exchanged views on how airports can better support frontline teams and minimise impacts to security operations.
The committee also invited representatives from each ACI region to share regional insights. Mr. Gary Leung, Senior Manager, Security & Facilitation of ACI APAC & MID, delivered a presentation highlighting key security priorities for airports in the region, covering emerging threats, people development, technology adoption, and capacity building for smaller airports. These regional perspectives provided a strong basis for ACI World to develop its global security strategy.
Besides, a number of other important topics were discussed during the three-day meeting, including One-stop Security (OSS), access control, and human factors development. The meeting was concluded with a technical tour of Hong Kong International Airport.
