An airport perspective on scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel

  • 2026-07-20

ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID) reaffirmed the critical role of airports in driving decarbonisation at the MyAero Sustainable Aviation APAC Symposium 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently.

Representing airports, ACI APAC & MID highlighted the role of airports in enabling credible carbon accounting, accelerating Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) infrastructure readiness, and stakeholder alignment.

Optimising existing infrastructure for cost-effective SAF integration
Participating in the panel “Building a Robust APAC SAF Value Chain”, Head, Sustainability, Mr Ken Lau empahsised that that airports play a key role in enabling conditions needed for SAF deployment. “Airports strongly support the deployment of SAF as a vital short-to-medium-term solution to address their Scope 3 emissions and advance toward net zero goals,” Mr. Lau said. He also highlighted the evolving global policy signals, integrity and capital requirements, market infrastructure development, and the practical strategies needed to scale SAF.

Sustainable development in China
Turning to regional dynamics, Mr. Lau explored the rapidly evolving SAF landscape in China in another panel “Sustainable in China”, the session addressed how global energy market volatility and geopolitical shifts impact regional decarbonisation timelines. Mr. Lau benchmarked China's SAF deployment maturity against global leaders, outlining a clear roadmap for airport logistics, supply chain readiness, and localised scaling.

The symposium succeeded in bringing together governments, market leaders, airlines, and industry organisations to address the complex forces shaping the APAC SAF value chain. By focusing on smart logistics, policy harmonisation, and optimising existing assets, ACI APAC & MID continues to advocate for a sustainable aviation ecosystem with airport members in the future.
