ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East’s Net Zero Roadmap gains momentum; Bahrain Airport completes onsite assessment

  • 2025-09-25

The ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East’s Net Zero Roadmap programme is gaining momentum as Bahrain International Airport became the third airport in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region to complete the comprehensive onsite assessment. This marks a strategic milestone for ACI APAC & MID in accelerating decarbonisation efforts and advancing sustainable aviation in the region.

Following an agreement to participate in the programme, ACI APAC & MID facilitated the in-depth onsite assessment, a critical phase in the airport's decarbonisation journey. This assessment was designed to thoroughly evaluate the airport’s infrastructure, collect key data, engage stakeholders, and gain a comprehensive understanding of the airport’s environmental landscape to guide strategic decision-making. The onsite assessment that took place from 09 to 11 September 2025 brought together a team of experts, including specialists from NACO and supported by ACI APAC & MID’s, Manager-Sustainability, Environment, Mr. Mohan Sai Gurugubelli to ensure a robust and evidence-based review.

Over the three days, the expert team conducted:

  • Interactive workshops on BIA’s current carbon footprint, future sustainability ambitions, and the strategic pathways to Net Zero.

  • Engagement with key internal and external airport stakeholders including government agencies to ensure a holistic approach to emissions management.

  • Extensive airside and landside site visits to review energy-consuming assets, operational procedures, and existing emission-reduction initiatives.

  • Interviews with senior airport executives to gather insights, data, and documentation essential for the roadmap’s development.

This comprehensive approach ensured a thorough understanding of BIA’s current status and future decarbonisation opportunities.

What’s next

With the onsite assessment successfully completed, the expert team will now undertake further analysis to develop a tailor-made Net Zero Roadmap for BIA. This roadmap will provide structured recommendations, covering carbon footprint projections, governance frameworks, and targeted strategies across assets, fuels, and operations with key deliverables of Recommendations/Measures, Pathways to net zero and ACA Level 5, a high-level CAPEX plan, and an implementation timeline.
