Sunshine Coast Airport Stands with Aviation Industry for Airport Safety Week

  • 21 Oct 2020

Sunshine Coast Airport has joined forces with local aviation operators to carry out a safety inspection of its new runway as part national Airport Safety Week 2020.

Airport-based personnel participated in the ‘Foreign Object Debris’ walk on Wednesday, 21 October, to help locate material which may pose as safety hazards, including loose hardware, pavement fragments and even luggage.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie said in line with this year’s theme – ‘we are in this together’ – the exercise signified collaboration with the aviation industry which continued to endure the effects of COVID-19.

“It’s easy to feel alone in this strange new world but when it comes to safety – we’re all in it together, and this week we’re being reminded of that,” Mr Brodie said.

“Safety is always at the forefront of everything we do here and today’s activation brings awareness to the measures undertaken behind the scenes to ensure the safety of our people and our passengers.”

Mr Brodie said improved safety measures also featured throughout the Sunshine Coast Airport’s terminal in response to COVID-19, and reminded everyone of the need to play their part.

“We’re taking extra precautions to protect against the spread of COVID-19 such as more frequent cleaning, social distancing signage and introducing measures to limit contact surfaces and dwelling areas,” he said.

“As part of this, we’re only allowing travelling passengers through security screening and into our Departures terminal.

“We all have a part to play right now and we ask everyone to do their bit before they fly, while travelling through our airport and once on the plane.

“Download the COVID-Safe App, book carparking via our website, use online check in systems, wash your hands often and don’t travel if you feel unwell.”
