Passenger surge highlights need for new Perth Airport projects

  • 2025-07-11

Perth Airport has recorded its highest ever annual passenger numbers with 17.48 million passengers travelling through its terminals in FY25 – representing an 8.5 per cent increase on last year’s 16.1million . The number includes 5.14 million international passengers which is a significant 18.3 per cent on last year where we saw 4.35 million international passengers travel through the terminals. Regional passenger numbers continue to grow with an increase of 3.7 per cent on last year seeing numbers grow from 6 million to 6.24 million contributing to the highest ever total domestic passenger numbers.

Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters said it’s been an extraordinarily busy year for the airport with more growth to come. “While a lot of the public focus has been on our plans for the future the Perth Airport team has been cracking on with the job of helping record numbers of Western Australians get to and from their destination.

“Our Operations, Terminals and Ground Transport teams have done an amazing job dealing with this increased workload while ensuring we operate safely and securely.
“With these incredibly strong numbers and the continued growth that we are expecting over the next few years, it’s imperative that we keep on track and progressing with our ambitious redevelopment program.

“Over the next decade we will deliver an expanded international terminal, new terminal facilities for Qantas and Jetstar flights, a parallel runway, with associated aprons and taxiways, two multi-storey carparks along with significant access road upgrades, and our first airport hotel.

“This will deliver on the long-held vision for One Airport which will create greater efficiency for airlines, a better travel experience for passengers, and major economic benefits for Western Australia.

“The first of two multi-storey car parks is currently under construction and will provide additional bays near the terminals and improve access for pick-up and drop-off.

“Work is also underway at Terminal 2 to add more departure gates and seating, and we are upgrading our retail and food & beverage offering at Terminal 1 International.

“We’ve also commenced preliminary works for the new parallel runway. The runway will deliver major benefits for airlines, agriculture exporters, the business community, the tourism industry, the resource sector, and the education sector.

“We are also working closely with our airline partners and agencies on the design of the new terminal facilities, including a new terminal for the Qantas Group to relocate to Airport Central.

“We’ve also partnered with Australia’s largest hotel operator, Accor to operate the first hotel on the airport estate under the Pullman Hotels & Resorts brand.

“Building major projects within an operating airport environment was always going to present challenges for traffic management.

“We are already seeing additional pressure on the road network. We understand this is causing unavoidable inconvenience for some passengers and we are working hard to minimise the disruption.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding being shown by travellers as we deliver this significant investment which will transform Perth Airport and take us into the future.”
