Macau International Airport launches MIA one ID smart security and boarding services, upgrading travel experience
- 2026-01-08

Macau International Airport officially launches the "MIA One ID" smart security and boarding services, utilizing a facial recognition-based single identity identification system integrated with the airport's departure system and passenger identification system. This implementation ensures full coverage of targeted passengers, completing a paperless travel process that includes pre-security checks and self-boarding, allowing travelers to enjoy more convenient, efficient, and travel services.
The "MIA One ID" smart security and boarding system is set to complete its installation by the end of 2025 and has been immediately put into use. Passengers aged 11 or above holding electronic travel documents can enroll for the "MIA One ID" smart security and boarding services at check-in counters, self-check-in kiosks, or e-security gates. Since the service has been launched for a week, passengers can pass through security checks within 2 minutes (no need to open hand luggage for security checks or body searches), which has been significantly improved with the queuing time. Currently, all boarding gates connected to the loading bridges are equipped with self-boarding systems for passengers' convenience.
The management of Macau International Airport has consistently paid close attention to the upgrade plans for the departure security area. Research work commenced in early 2024, balancing operational and commercial development factors. After engineering design, an optimization plan was developed to adjust the business layout, utilizing part of the space from former duty-free shops to expand the security and departure areas.
Through the optimization of the security area space and the introduction of technical renovations, security processing efficiency will be enhanced. The ONE ID (Single Identity Identification System) is a global initiative promoted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and its deployment and implementation are crucial indicators of the airport's digital transformation. Biometric identification and trusted digital identities are key components of the ONE ID concept, which will not only enhance the passenger airport experience but also improve the efficiency and safety of paperless identity processes.
The upgrade project for the departure security channels and areas at Macau International Airport commenced in 2025 after multiple rounds of coordination and was divided into two parts that took place sequentially without impacting airport operations. This included area renovations, security equipment procurement, and the installation of the "MIA One ID" smart security and boarding system, with an investment of approximately MOP43 million. Most of the area renovations and security equipment procurement projects were completed in November and are now operational, expanding the overall security space by about half. This includes eight security lanes equipped with an automated carry-on baggage screening system, automatic tray retrieval, assisted unpacking workstations, and millimeter-wave body imaging security scanners. The upgrades have increased the airport's passenger security processing capacity.
Macau International Airport will continue to deepen its construction efforts, upholding the core values of "Safety, Efficiency, and Effectiveness" while leveraging technology to transform the airport into a modern urban infrastructure that integrates operations, security, and services, actively supporting the Macao SAR government in promoting the "1+4" moderately diversified development strategy and participating in the quality development of the integrated tourism and leisure industry, continuously enriching the connotation of the "World Tourism and Leisure Center."
