It’s a Hoppy Easter for Families as First Flights to Albury From the Sunshine Coast Airport Commence

  • 2023-04-07

As the school holidays get into full swing over the Easter break, Bonza is today continuing the roll out of their new routes, with passengers set to enjoy purple hot cross buns by Adriano Zumbo and a visit from the Easter Bunny as they take to the skies headed for Albury.

Departing from their home base at Sunshine Coast Airport, the new Albury route is already proving popular with passengers keen to connect with family and friends and for those preparing for this year’s ski season to get underway.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO, Andrew Brodie said the Albury route is a first for both destinations and has received strong interest from both visitors and locals alike.

“It’s a boost for both regions with more than 38,500 seats available between the two destinations.

“With two flights every week between the Sunshine Coast and Albury this new route is already proving to be quite popular for people wanting to catch up with family and friends, and there is also a lot of interest for people wanting to get away this winter to go skiing.

“While the Sunshine Coast is blessed with beautiful weather and amazing beaches, we are short on snow, so to be able to jump on a plane to Albury and be somewhere like Falls Creek, in less than two hours after you land, is very appealing to residents of the Sunshine Coast.

“And in a similar manner, residents from around the Albury region can now enjoy a warm weather getaway to the Sunshine Coast quickly, easily and affordably, and all without having to commute to Brisbane or Melbourne Airports.

“The introduction of this new route is an important economic enabler for each destination that will have a positive impact that extends beyond tourism, and with Bonza calling the Sunshine Coast Airport home, we are proud of the role we have played in facilitating this,” Mr Brodie said.

Bonza CEO, Tim Jordan, who was on board this historic flight said, “Sunshine Coast to Albury and return are amongst our best selling routes so far. We’ve seen many people book for these school holidays and also into winter thanks to Albury’s close proximity to the ski fields and the Sunshine Coast’s warm winter weather. We’re looking forward to taking customers skiing and surfing on both directions of this new route.”

The first inaugural flight between the Sunshine Coast and Albury and is one of 13 destinations Bonza will service from their home base on the Sunshine Coast and will operate two times per week including a Friday to Monday option for SE Queenslanders wanting a weekend away.

With Bonza anticipated to bring an additional 772,000 seats to the Sunshine Coast and generate an estimated $86million in domestic visitor spend in the first 12 months, bringing the Airport Master Plan 2040 to life is a priority for Mr Brodie.

“We are embarking on a period of significant growth and change which will benefit all of SE Qld and we are only just getting started. The first stage was completed in June 2020 when we opened the new longer and wider runway and over the coming years our domestic terminal will double in size, there will be an expansion of the Aerospace Precinct and our Southern Gateway will start to shape.

“In fact, we will be investing up to $1B in infrastructure which will have a significant impact on the regional economy. We will create jobs, attract investment and support the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We are building a legacy for generations to come and the Sunshine Coast Airport will play a pivotal role in firmly putting the Sunshine Coast on the map as a destination for business and pleasure.

“Our partnership with Bonza is an important milestone in our long term plans for Sunshine Coast Airport which will see us welcome greater volumes of travellers, opening up opportunities not previously available.

“We cannot wait to welcome visitors from across Australia traveling on these brand new routes,” Mr Brodie said.
