Gold Coast Airport welcomes more than 1.2 million travellers over summer peak

  • 2026-02-11

Gold Coast Airport has recorded one of its busiest summers on record with more than 1.2 million passengers travelling through the terminal over the peak holiday period.

Around 600,000 people travelled in December alone, with a further 637,000 travellers since the beginning of January – 47,000 more passengers than last summer.

Queensland Airports Limited’s Chief of Aviation Adam Rowe said it was positive to see such strong demand for travel over the holiday season.

“We saw passenger numbers spike between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, with the 27th and 28th of December being our busiest days, closely followed by the 23rd and 30th of December,” Mr Rowe said.

“The first two weeks of January were the busiest with several days of more than 23,000 passengers, followed by another peak ahead of the long weekend on Friday, 23 January.

“Demand for flights in and out of the Gold Coast was exceptionally high with around 90% of seats on all flights booked.

“The Sydney and Melbourne routes continue to be our busiest, however we also saw strong demand for international travel over the summer.

“More than 126,000 passengers travelled on one of our six New Zealand routes – 18,000 more than the same period last year.

“Bali was also a popular pick, with two airlines now servicing the Denpasar route passenger numbers jumped by more than 75% when compared to last year – with more than 23,000 passengers over December and January.

Later this year Gold Coast Airport will welcome new international services to Auckland with Qantas and to Nadi, Fiji with Fiji Airways, responding to the region’s growing demand for travel.
