According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global air passenger traffic is projected to reach 5.2 billion in 2026, with a yearly growth of 4.4% expected comparing to the year of 2025. Air cargo volume is predicted to be increase to 71.6 million tonnes, representing a yearly growth of 2.4%. Passenger demand in the Asia-Pacific region remains strong, with China and India leading regional growth, primarily driven by increased tourism and a growing middle class.
However, the industry faces headwinds including rising costs due to bottlenecks in the aerospace supply chain, geopolitical conflicts, weak global trade, and rising jet fuel prices. Macau International Airport will continue to attract more new airlines to join Macau to launch international routes, and encourage existing airlines to add flight frequencies to existing destinations.
The Airport has actively integrated regional transport resources with three major hub service centers set up in 2025 to promote regional connectivity and the benefits of "Flying via Macau", while offering convenient flight information, ticketing, and immigration assistance. In the future, it is strived to optimize multi-modal transportation ports service, assist airlines in expanding their customer base and continuously optimizing their services.
In the second quarter, the coverage of the "Check' n Fly" will be expanded to achieve a seamless travel experience of flight check-in and baggage drop-off service upon leaving the hotel and going directly to the airport for boarding afterwards. The food kiosk in the restricted area of the mezzanine floor on the north side of the airport terminal will be opened as planned, which is expected to bring a brand-new experience to travellers.
The core projects of infrastructure in the Macau International Airport Development Plan - MIA Expansion & Reclamation Project is under implementation, runway repair and improvement works will be launched, and MIA Hengqin Upstream Cargo Terminal Project are progressing in an orderly manner and is expected to be topped out in the third quarter and the structural construction to be completed by the end of the year. The advancement of these projects will strengthen the basic functions of Airport, promote the construction of Macau international air cargo hub on the west bank of the Pearl River, and continue to consolidate the strategic position of as "One Centre, One Platform, One Base".
