Airport Authority signs MoUs with Two Belt and Road partners to enhance connectivity and cooperation

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) exchanged Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with two counterparts in Central Asia at the Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong today, with a view to enhancing air connectivity with the region and cooperation in other aspects of aviation development.

Witnessed by Nicholas Ho Lik-chi, Commissioner for Belt and Road, Vivian Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK, exchanged signed MoUs respectively with the top management of Shymkent Airport in Kazakhstan, as well as the Uzbekistan Airports Joint Stock Company, the latter of which manages all 11 international and 8 domestic airports of Uzbekistan.

Apart from enhancing air connectivity with Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), the MoUs also focus on exchange of management experiences, advancing operation excellence and service enhancement, talent development through courses offered at Hong Kong International Aviation Academy (HKIAA), sustainability development of the aviation industry, and more.

Vivian Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK, said, “We are delighted to exchange these important MoUs with our partners to facilitate the opening of more routes and to increase the frequency of flights connecting with Hong Kong. We are also committed to nurturing and enriching aviation industry practitioners. Since 2017, the HKIAA has been providing a diverse range of programmes and courses to over 380,000 local, Mainland China, and overseas participants, including 530 from Belt and Road countries. We are glad that our expertise and experience are valued by our partners in the Belt and Road countries.”

As of March 2025, HKIA is connected to 58 destination airports in 36 Belt and Road countries.

AAHK is continuing its efforts to attract more airlines to operate flights to Hong Kong and further strengthen HKIA’s position as a leading international aviation hub in Asia and a prime gateway connecting the Mainland to the world. Currently, the airport’s extensive air network connects to over 200 destinations worldwide. About 140 airlines are operating at HKIA, exceeding the number that before the pandemic.
