ACI Asia-Pacific Hosts Webinar on “Green Airport Building and its Benefits to Decarbonisation”

  • 2022-07-25

ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Environment Committee Members and Environmental Sustainability experts joined forces to share insights at a webinar on Green Airport Building and its Benefits to Decarbonisation.

Hosted by ACI Asia-Pacific on July 19, 2022, the webinar aimed at promoting environmental best practices to minimise airports’ impacts on the environment and gain insight to build resilient and sustainable airports of tomorrow.

The experts explored how airports will need to adapt and transform, with a focus on sustainability as it becomes critical for the industry to not only consider their own operations, but also the communities they serve.

Strategic plans for new construction buildings and existing buildings that lead to green airport transformation, reduction of carbon footprint strategies towards a net zero future, and achievement of green building certification programmes were discussed in the webinar.

Airports from the region with remarkable achievements in green building certification programmes, including Green Star, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal (PEER) were invited to share how the rating tools and which eco-elements enhance the overall environmental performance and energy efficiency of operational buildings to advance airport decarbonisation.

Experts acknowledged that sustainable architecture designs, energy efficient measures and resilient infrastructure are the key for green building transformation. Besides, ‘Green Airport Buildings’ are no longer a premium, but a basic requirement and standard for airport business today. It has become a pre-requisite to pave the way towards a net-zero future.

Given the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) call for a net-zero economy by 2050, the aviation industry, at large, must develop more ambitious CO2 reduction goals to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Airports in our region are taking concrete steps towards net zero CO2 emissions, with plans to further accelerate commitments.
