The ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East’s latest Airport Industry Outlook provides a positive trend into the recovery of passenger traffic and airport finances, but macro-economic factors still pose a challenge for the overall recovery of the sector. The Airport Industry Outlook reveals the overall seat capacity in H2 2023 is just 3% below the levels recorded in 2019 H2.

This is the fifth edition of the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Airport Industry Outlook – Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. It is an up-todate snapshot of airport business performance across the region with an analysis of the key industry trends. This edition examines the latest data affecting air traffic and airport performance including the latest IMF World Economic Outlook updates, which indicate a global slowdown in growth due to increased economic uncertainty and inflationary pressures.

This study introduces the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC/MID) Air Connectivity Index, designed to measure an airport's effectiveness in enabling passengers to access the global air transport network through high-quality connections. For the first time, this Index employs a comprehensive and consumer-centric approach to evaluate air connectivity. In addition to providing current insights into airport industry connectivity in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, the study highlights the critical challenges facing the sector's modernisation in the future.

The Airport Industry Outlook (Asia-Pacific and the Middle East) for the fourth quarter of 2022 (October to December), examines the latest data affecting air traffic and airport performance: recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, relaxation of travel restrictions, and the latest IMF World Economic Outlook updates.

The Airport Industry Outlook (Asia-Pacific and the Middle East) for the third quarter of 2022 (July to September), developed in partnership with Mott MacDonald, provides a snapshot of airport business performance across the region as well as a focus on investment in greenfield airport development with a focus on sustainability.

The second edition of the Industry Outlook for the second quarter of 2022 (April to June), developed in partnership with Mott MacDonald provides a snapshot of airport business performance across the region with a short-term analysis of the key industry trends.

An independent study was commissioned by ACI Asia-Pacific and was undertaken by Oxera and Edge Health to analyse the effectiveness of travel restrictions. The study, based on modelling different scenarios of COVID-19 variants of concern with similar or higher level of infectiousness than the current Omicron, revealed that travel restrictions such as quarantine and testing would be ineffective in mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
