South Islanders gain direct route to paradise with new Christchurch, Rarotonga flights.
South Islanders dreaming of tropical escapes will soon be able to skip the Auckland stopover, with Air New Zealand announcing new non-stop flights between Christchurch and Rarotonga.
Launching in May 2026, the seasonal service will operate three times a week through to October, perfectly timed for winter weary travellers looking to swap the chill for some sunshine.
Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson says the new route is a win for South Islanders and another milestone in the airport’s growing international network.
“Until now, South Islanders have needed to connect through Auckland to reach Rarotonga. This direct route means more time relaxing on the beach and less time in transit.”
“It’s another great step in growing international options for our airport and its good news for families and active holidaymakers who want to mix relaxation with adventure.”
Rarotonga’s warm climate, turquoise lagoons and welcoming culture make it a favourite holiday destination. With a flight time of about four and a half hours, the new service means sunseekers can be enjoying a sunset meal after leaving Christchurch in the afternoon.
The new service will add around 18,000 seats between Christchurch and the Cook Islands, opening more opportunities for tourism and connections across the Pacific.
