Smart Shopping Trolleys Launched at KKIA

  • 2023-01-25

Riyadh Airports Company (RAC) has announced that Intelligent Track Systems (ITS), with the corporation of Saudi Logistics & Technical Support (SALTS) company, has landed its fifth airport project within a year to supply smart shopping trolleys to the domestic Terminal 5 at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (KKIA), one of the busiest airports in the Middle East region and which is managed and operated by RAC.

KKIA is the first airport in Saudi Arabia to provide this service. The trolleys are enabled with an interactive map of all facilities and shops at Terminal 5, and passengers can scan their boarding pass, enter their flight number, or easily select their flight from the flight’s list to find out the gate number and boarding time left.

The CEO of Riyadh Airports, Eng. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Maghlouth, said: “All the departments at RAC have been working and cooperating to bring about the digital transformation of KKIA as we are aware of how important it is for passengers to have an easy and tech-enabled travel experience.”

Mr. Husam Al Mosheleh, ICT General Manager at RAC, commented: “This pilot launch has been made in cooperation with Intelligent Track Systems (ITS) and in parallel with the successive technical developments KKIA is witnessing. The smart shopping trolleys hugely upgrade our facilities and services.”

The trolleys are free to use in the terminal, and they also provide passengers with Airport Rewards updates and latest offers from the shops in the Terminal.

ITS CEO, Morten Pankoke, said: “It is early days but the first results at airports where we have tested ITS look solid and the KPIs are very encouraging. Our first entry into Saudi Arabia with the Riyadh Project is also a special moment for us as the Middle East region is one of our key strategic markets and therefore an important milestone”.
The trolleys, which have been proven to increase retail sales and help guide passengers around airside shopping areas, were first piloted in San Diego International Airport last year where they proved to be a highly valuable asset to passengers and operators.
