Record First Week of Easter School Holidays

  • 2023-04-06

Brisbane Airport is experiencing its busiest 7-day post-pandemic period with people taking advantage of the school holidays and Easter to getaway, in a boost for Queensland’s visitor economy.

In the 7-days from Friday 31 March to Thursday 6 April, a total of 426,000 people are forecast to pass through the international and domestic terminals, the highest 7-day figure since the pandemic struck.

Last Friday 31 March was the busiest post-pandemic combined domestic and international day at BNE with 66,223 travelling through the airport. For comparison, the pre-pandemic record for the greatest number of passengers stands at 83,867 which was set on 22 December 2017.

"When Brisbane Airport is busy, Queensland’s tourism economy is busy, and that is great for jobs. And right now, the lure of our summer-like weather is magnetically attractive to southerners," according to Stephen Beckett, Head of Public Affairs for Brisbane Airport Corporation.

An influx of tourists is expected with school holidays starting in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, ACT, Northern Territory, and New Zealand which is Queensland’s largest overseas contributor of overseas visitor numbers.

"With so many people travelling this month, we’re recommending people arrive 90 minutes before domestic departures, and 3 hours prior for overseas travel, so that you build in a buffer to cope with busy roads, parking, terminals or delays to your taxi or rideshare."

Passengers are also advised to book parking well in advance, with an increase in the number of people driving to the airport rather than catching taxis or rideshare.
