Nelson Airport’s Walk the Runway event is back
- 2025-12-12
Nelson Airport’s popular Walk the Runway community event returns on 24 January 2026, offering a one of a kind experience – a sunset stroll down the airport runway.
Walk the Runway was previously held in 2023 and 2024, but the airport’s $10 million Apron Project construction work in 2025 meant the event was not possible this year. With the completion of the apron reconstruction and stormwater upgrade scheduled for this month, the event will be back and better than ever in 2026.
Nelson Airport Head of Corporate Services Beth Catley said the airport was excited to bring back the event, which attracted crowds of about 2000 people when held previously.
“It’s such a special experience to take a behind-the-scenes look at the airfield, capture stunning sunset pictures and create lasting memories. We love having the chance to show people a different side of their airport.”
Walk the Runway is a fundraiser supporting the entry of Nelson Airport Emergency Service team members in the 2026 Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge, with all proceeds going to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. Entry is by donation.
This year, the airport is offering participants the opportunity to pre-book a ride on the double-decker Summer Beach Bus to and from the event, with pick-ups and drop-offs available in central Nelson and Tāhunanui. Seats are strictly limited and must be pre-booked online. Bus tickets are bookable for a donation.
Other transport options including biking, with bike storage facilities near the Assembly Point, and parking is free for those taking part.
