This exhibition spotlights the monumental Portuguese tile mural created in 1995 by the late Portuguese artist Mr. Eduardo Nery (1938-2013) for Macau International Airport. As a renowned visual artist and painter from Portugal, Mr. Nery’s works have been collected by prestigious institutions such as the National Museum Soares dos Reis in Porto and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
Stretching 210 meters in length and 2.1 meters in height, this grand mural draws inspiration from mythology, maritime history, the evolution of aviation, and cultural exchanges between China and Portugal. It masterfully integrates the essence of both Chinese and Portuguese cultures, reflecting Macau’s unique historical role as a meeting point of Eastern and Western civilizations. The mural also symbolizes the profound and enduring connection between these two cultures. Currently displayed in the mezzanine level of the airport departure hall, this significant artistic masterpiece is accessible to every traveller passing through Macau International Airport, offering a glimpse into a rich tapestry of shared heritage and artistic excellence.
During the ceremony, Chairman Ma and Professor Carlos Sena Caires, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Saint Joseph, delivered opening remarks. Chairman Ma expressed his sincere gratitude to Professor Carlos Sena Caires and his team for their close collaboration with the family of the late artist Mr. Eduardo Nery, which made it possible to present these invaluable manuscripts and graphic design drafts to the public.
Chairman Ma emphasized that an airport is not only a transportation hub but also a place that carries culture and memories. He reaffirmed commitment of CAM to promoting the integration of “Airport plus Culture” in the future, striving to build an international airport with greater humanistic warmth.
The exhibition showcases precious materials from Mr. Nery’s creative process, including sketches, color studies, and graphic designs, offering visitors an in-depth look into the artist’s methodology and providing an immersive experience into Macau’s diverse culture. Macau International Airport warmly invites the public to visit the exhibition and explore the historical narrative behind this extraordinary tile panel. The exhibition will be on view until January 2026.
