Macau International Airport successfully upgraded to Level 3 of Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Programme
- 2026-02-24
Macau International Airport (MIA) started to participate in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Programme since 2014. Until now, over 600 airports from various countries and regions have been participating in the ACA Programme, which is the only global carbon management certification programme for airports.
Since participating in this Programme, MIA has contributed continuous efforts to reduce the carbon emissions every year in order to maintain the Level 2 accreditation. The planning and preparation for the upgrade of the ACA Programme began at the end of 2022, under the top management policy from the company, to the introduction of a set of actions which include training, setting carbon emission reduction targets and corresponding actions, as well as establishing a carbon emission platform, etc.
MIA actively led the airport stakeholders to participate in carbon emission reduction, and it successfully extended the carbon footprints by including the apron activities and landing and take-off operations of aircraft, airport staff commuting and business travels, passengers travelling to and from the airport, and the emissions from airport waste and wastewater treatment etc. This helped to further promote and to increase the intensity of global carbon emission reductions.
Mr. Stefano Baronci, Director General of Airport Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East, said: “We congratulate Macau International Airport on its significant progress in reducing carbon emissions. By positioning itself as a leader in efficient carbon management, the airport is demonstrating a strong commitment to a more sustainable future. Its approach is fully aligned with the industry’s collective vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”
With the collaborative efforts from all the airport stakeholders, MIA successfully upgraded to Level 3 of the ACA Programme in November 2025. MIA will continue to work with local community, stakeholders and airport operators to actively address climate change and strive for further emission reduction, accelerating the steady sustainability development of aviation industry of Macau, as well as providing concrete support to the global carbon emission reduction targets and the national “Dual Carbon Goals”.
MIA would like to express gratitude to all the stakeholders for their active participation in trainings, provision of carbon emission data and contribution to emission reduction.
