  • 2023-10-11

Kannur International Airport Limited has soared back to success in the second quarter of this financial year, showcasing remarkable recovery from the challenges posed by the airline crisis. The airport, which serves as a vital gateway to the region, has reported impressive figures, coming within 2% of its Q1 passenger numbers.

One of the standout highlights of Q2 was the significant increase in passenger traffic, particularly with the introduction of new flights and aircraft upgrades by leading airlines.

Indigo's Phenomenal Growth
Indigo Airlines experienced a remarkable 29% surge in passenger numbers during Q2. This impressive growth was attributed to the addition of a new flight to Mumbai, coupled with the upgrade of aircraft operating on the Mumbai sector from A320 to A321.

Air India Express Takes Flight
Air India Express, another prominent player at Kannur Airport, recorded an astounding 72% year-on-year increase in passenger count for Q2. This surge in passengers was further mirrored by a 34% increase in Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) compared to the same period last year. Additionally, a 5% increase in ATMs was observed when comparing Q2 to Q1 of this financial year.

Sector-wise Success
A closer look at sector-wise performance reveals even more impressive numbers. Air India Express added a Sharjah flight, leading to a 19% increase in the Sharjah sector compared to Q1. Indigo, with an additional flight to Bangalore, contributed a 15% increase in passenger count for the Bangalore sector.

International Boom
Kannur Airport witnessed substantial growth in international sectors during Q2. Year-on-year comparisons showed remarkable increases in passengers for Dubai (17%), Sharjah (38%), Abu Dhabi (35%), Bahrain (26%), and Doha (19%). These figures underscore the airport's importance in connecting travelers to key international destinations.

Domestic Uptick
Domestic sectors also reported impressive growth, with Mumbai seeing a staggering 107% increase in passenger numbers, Bangalore experiencing a 52% surge, and Hyderabad witnessing a commendable 15% growth.

Kannur International Airport Limited is aggressively engaging with major airlines for further route development. With airlines like Indigo and Air India Express driving passenger numbers to new heights, and sector-wise expansion opening up exciting possibilities for travelers, the airport's future looks brighter than ever.

The recovery of Kannur Airport not only bodes well for the region's connectivity but also demonstrates the resilience and adaptability of the aviation industry in the face of adversity.
