Funding for Newcastle Direct Flights a Welcome Boost for Region

  • 2023-02-27

Newcastle Airport has welcomed today’s State Government announcement of support for two direct Newcastle routes.

NSW Minister for Tourism, Ben Franklin, announced today that Qantas Group has been successful with its application for the NSW Aviation Attraction Fund to support the Newcastle to Cairns and Newcastle to Adelaide routes.

Responding to the news, Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said the announcement was significant for the Greater Hunter.

“This is a great result for our region and a recognition from the NSW Government that Newcastle Airport is a key part of our state’s recovery,” he said.

“More new routes mean growth and employment opportunities and most importantly, greater connectivity for the people of our region. Western Australia and Tasmania remain firmly on our radar as the next key domestic targets. We will then have direct connections to all states across Australia.”

“I want to thank the NSW Government and DNSW for the support through the Aviation Attraction Fund. We look forward to continuing to work with them in our strong partnership with DNSW as we continue to grow opportunities for our region,” Dr Cock said.

The NSW Aviation Attraction Fund aims to build aviation capacity in the state by securing routes that will drive significant economic and social benefits. It is open to all domestic and international airlines servicing the state or planning to service the state.

Jetstar recently announced the continuing seasonal operation of direct flights to Cairns, and Qantas has been servicing the Newcastle to Adelaide route since November 2021.

Already established as an international gateway, by 2024 Newcastle Airport’s facilities will be upgraded to enable long-haul international.

“The Greater Hunter is Australia’s largest underserved airline market,” Dr Cock said. ”We’re continuing our discussions with key trading and aviation partners in Asia and beyond. We have some very real short- and long-term prospects, initiatives like the NSW Aviation Attraction Fund are critical to making these a reality.”

Dr Cock said the strength of 12 current direct destinations is thanks to regional support and augurs well for the opening of further routes.

“I want to thank our community for their continued support – this drives our commitment to being the airport our region deserves as we grow.”

Fly direct to Adelaide from Newcastle Airport with 4 flights per week.

Fly direct to Cairns from Newcastle Airport with 3 flights per week from 24 June 2023.
