Fiji Airports Awards Nadi International Airport baggage handling system upgrade to Alstef Group

  • 2025-09-05

Fiji Airports today announced a major milestone in its commitment to delivering world-class airport infrastructure, awarding the contract for the upgrade of the Baggage Handling System (BHS) at Nadi International Airport to Alstef Group, a global leader in baggage handling solutions.

The partnership with Alstef Group builds on its proven track record of delivering baggage handling projects across Australia and New Zealand, including Perth, Newcastle, Christchurch, and Auckland Airports.

The $26 million (FJD) investment, with $8.1 million awarded to Alstef for the supply of Conveyor belt system and installation, represents one of the most significant upgrades in the heart of operations at the Nadi International airport after many years.

In 2024, Nadi International Airport welcomed 2.9 million passengers, cementing Fiji Airports vision of becoming the world-class aviation hub of the Blue Pacific.

Passenger volumes are projected to rise to 5.7 million by 2033 and 8 million by 2048, underscoring the urgent need for future-ready airport systems.

The project will deliver a modern, more efficient, and resilient baggage system, including upgrading the check-in counter conveyor with dual conveyors to improve throughput during peak travel times.

It also includes a new outbound screening line with Standard 3 Hold Baggage Screening machines for enhanced security and efficiency, a large new make-up carousel that boosts capacity and operational flexibility, and automatic Bag Drops, delivered in partnership with Collins Aerospace, providing greater passenger convenience.

The scope of work includes a phased replacement of all Hold Baggage Screening machines with European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) Standard 3 and US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved technology, with the first unit already completed in England and expected to arrive in Fiji before the end of the year.

“This project is about delivering a seamless and secure travel experience, supporting our tourism industry, and ensuring that Nadi International Airport continues to stand proudly as Fiji’s international gateway to the world,” Fiji Airports chief executive Mesake Nawari said.

The Baggage Handling System upgrade is a key milestone which outlines future-ready infrastructure to meet the growing demands of passengers and strengthen Fiji’s role in regional aviation.
