
Air Traffic grows steadily at HKIA in May

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) today released the air traffic statistics of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for May 2025.
HKIA handled 4.86 million passengers and 32,480 flight movements in May, representing year-on-year growths of 19.7% and 8.8% respectively. The passenger growth was mainly driven by the double-digit increases in transfer/transit passengers and visitors. Traffic growth continued to be led by routes to/ from Mainland China and Southeast Asia, which show the most increases during the month.
Cargo volume recorded a year-on-year increase of 1.4% to 422,000 tonnes in May 2025. The growth was underpinned by a 12.7% increase in transshipments. Traffic to/ from Europe and the Middle East were the primary drivers of cargo growth, showing the most increases during the month.
Over the first five months of the year, passenger volume saw 17.5% year-on-year growth to 24.64 million, while flight movements increased by 11.0% to 161,130. Cargo traffic grew 2.7% year-on-year to 2 million tonnes.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume rose by 20.1% year-on-year to 56.7 million, while flight movements increased by 16.8% to 379,295. Cargo throughput grew 7.8% year-on-year to 4.99 million tonnes.
In other news, AAHK received 10 accolades in the "Hong Kong Association for Customer Service Excellence Award Programme 2024”, including 1st Runner-up for the “Grand Award”. These distinctions were given for AAHK initiatives ranging from innovative projects to outstanding team and individual efforts. Of particular note were the “Data-Driven Strategies for Optimising On-Time Flight Departures” initiative, which secured the Gold Award in the “Digital Service Strategy” category, and “HKIA Voice”, which won the Silver Award in the “Customer Care” category.
