Air Traffic grows steadily at HKIA in January

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) handled 5.51 million passengers and 34,445 flight movements in January 2026, representing year-on-year increases of 4.5% and 2.4% respectively.

 

Passenger traffic registered steady growth in the first month of 2026, with double-digit rise in transfer / transit passenger segment compared with the same period last year. Traffic to/from Chinese Mainland, Southeast Asia and North America recorded the most significant increases in the month.

 

Cargo throughput continued to gain momentum, with cargo volume growing 5.4% year on year to 415,000 tonnes during the month. All cargo sectors saw growth, with transshipment serving as the primary driver in the month, rising 18.2% year-on-year to 93,000 tonnes. Cargo traffic to/from Europe, Southeast Asia and Chinese Mainland grew the most among key trading regions during the month.

 

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume rose by 13% year on year to 61.21 million, while flight movements increased by 7.4% to 395,510. Cargo throughput grew by 2.8% to 5.09 million tonnes.

 

Meanwhile, during the Chinese New Year holiday period daily passenger throughput is expected to reach 210,000 on peak days. The most popular flight destinations are Taipei, Bangkok and Tokyo. Airport Authority Hong Kong will deploy additional manpower and work closely with the airport community to ensure smooth airport operations during the holiday period.
