Solar power generation facility "KIX-ITAMI Sora x Solar" to be born! New solar power generation starts at Kansai International Airport and Osaka International Airport

  • 2023-11-16

Kansai Airports Group is pleased to announce that a new solar power generation facility "KIXITAMI Sora x Solar*1," will start generating and supplying power at Kansai International Airport and Osaka International Airport from spring 2025.

The project will employ an on-site PPA*² scheme, and the power generated will be consumed within each airport. The annual power generation at each airport is expected to account for approximately 21% of Kansai Airports Group’s annual power consumption at Kansai International Airport and approximately 3% at Osaka International Airport, making this one of the largest onsite PPA projects in Japan. This is an important initiative for achieving our 2030 reduction target for greenhouse gas emissions (50% reduction from 2016 levels). In addition, the project is
expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 12,000 tons in FY2025, equivalent to approximately 16% of the Kansai Airports Group's CO2 emissions in FY2022.

This project is supported by the "FY2023 Subsidy for Airport Decarbonization Promotion Project (Equipment Installation Support)" from the Civil Aviation Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

Kansai Airports Group will make company-wide efforts to reduce environmental impact and contribute to realizing a sustainable society through the operation of airports, which are public infrastructure.

*¹ Trademark registration in process
*² On-site power purchase agreement (PPA) is a scheme whereby a power generator installs, owns, and maintains solar power generation facilities on the premises of a customer (electricity user) at the power producer's expense, and then supplies electricity generated by the facilities to that customer.
